Organizing Tips from a Not-So-Organized Girl

I am thrilled to introduce to you my dear cousin Jackie! You'll be seeing some posts from her on the blog along with my posts and we have some really fun things planned. She has some really good tips on getting organized. She's an amazing mom and is such a wonderful person.
Enjoy her post on organizing!

Hello! I’m Jackie, Dresden’s cousin from sunny southern Arizona. I am a wife to a ropin’-lovin’ husband, and mom to two, soon to be three little stinkers (that I love immensely). I enjoy crafting and sewing, but lately I’ve been trying to get organized and on top of things. (Because then I’ll have more time to craft and sew, right???) Is there anybody out there who has this down?? I struggle with this, especially with kids now. I definitely appreciate a clean, organized home, but I’m not OCD about it and sometimes the messes stay for…well, longer than they should. So in my quest to be more organized, I have determined two things:

1—Everything needs a place, and

2—I need a routine.

I enjoy being a mother and I enjoy being able to stay home with my kids, but maintaining a household is not easy or always enjoyable. I’ll admit it, it’s a lot of work, more than I realized. My goal is to not try to fit into the perfect wife/mom/homemaker stereotype, my goal is to just do what I feel good about, what works for me, and what makes my family happy. I realize the tips I share with you today may be something you have already been doing for years, something you would maybe take into consideration, or something that wouldn’t even work for you. And I’m okay with that. But hopefully it gives you some insight or inspiration, if you’re needing it.

So, as I mentioned before, I have determined that a big key to an organized home is having a place for everything. There are so many books and magazines, blogs and Pinterest that have tips to help you declutter and get organized. I don’t really have anything magical, new, or earth-shattering to say about this, but my focus right now is to live more simply. There is a book out there titled “Organized Simplicity”. That is how I want my home to be. It’s not there yet, but that’s my goal. I wish I was Mary Poppins and could just snap my fingers to get the job done, but alas, it just doesn’t work. Work is what you have to go. And what it really comes down to is going through each room and area in the house, getting rid of things you don’t use or need (trash, donate or yard sale) then finding a place for everything that’s left. Easier. Said. Than. Done. Yes, it’s not fun work, but it is rewarding once it’s done.

While I’m still working on that, I have tried to also figure out a routine that works for me, mainly when it comes to cleaning. How many of you have had that unexpected visitor show up at your door, or guests that ask to stay at your house the night before they are to show up, putting you into overdrive trying to get things cleaned and looking nice? Um…not me… Well, to avoid that craziness, I try to keep things clean by having a routine each day. And thanks to Pinterest, I finally found something that has helped me:

This is my version of a cleaning schedule that I saw here http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-cleaning-process-and-500-give-away.html

I’ve been trying to do this for a long time, but now that I finally have it on paper I’ve been so much better at it. I think it’s pretty self-explanatory, but I basically have morning and evening chores that I try to do every day, as well as a room or rooms to be cleaned each day. I have a basic three-bedroom house, so this is what works for me. Or, that I’m trying to make work. I live in the desert where it’s always dusty, and the living room is the main area that we do things in, so that’s why I do it twice a week. Usually Friday is a quick wipe down/vacuum though, and on Tuesdays I put a little more work into it. Each area/room gets a deep clean once a month to get the areas that get overlooked—fans and light fixtures, blinds, baseboards, top of fridge, etc. Close friends and relatives that are reading this are probably laughing right now because they’ve seen how disastrous my house can be, but I will admit I’m not perfect at following my routine. Life is crazy and busy and sometimes I just don’t want to do anything! Please, somebody empathize with me here. But I really am trying to make this work, and hopefully I’m not the only one that struggles with this.

This is just a start, and I hope it was helpful to you in some way or another. If there’s anybody out there that’s not perfect at this, it’s me. So please know that while I have an organized system, I’m by no means completely organized. I do believe as my dad always said that “cleanliness is next to Godliness”, but at the same time I don’t beat myself up if I don’t get everything checked off. There really are things that are better than a spotless home, and no reason to stress over a mess, at least in my opinion. I hope to be able to share some more tips about organization in the near future (as soon as I fine-tune them!) and well as more exciting things like holiday crafts! Thanks for letting me stop by!

guest post: Shannon Sews

Hey everyone, please give a warm welcome to my guest blogger today...Shannon Sews!!

 Greetings from ShannonSews!
I’m so excited to be able to do a guest post on Dresden’s blog. She’s so cute and full of talent. I love making new blogging friends who enjoy creating and sewing like I do.

Okay, a little about me.
My name is Shannon (probably already knew that). I'm a Seattle native and love my life here with my sweet husband, and neary-by family. The city is beautiful, the air is fresh and the scenery is green.

It seems that you kind of fall into what you love (that's been the case with me anyway) and about a year ago I stumbled upon a hidden passion of mine. Sewing. I love the challenge of a good clothing refashion, the inspiration of design, the freedom of creativity and the sweet satisfaction of my designs coming to life.

Before long, sewing became much more than a hobby for me. I started consigning and opened an etsy shop: Shannon Sorensen Designs. A place I could share my heart-felt work.

I have so many things I want to add to my shop. My mind often swirls with new ideas and designs. I currently have a crush on pillows

and designing baby bibs and burp cloth sets. Babies deserve a little glam too.

We'll see where else the wind takes me.

In my non-sewing time, I help manage an after-school program. I just love those kids. Contributing to their lives every day is very fulfilling. I wouldn't feel complete without it.

Outside of my "shop" projects and school job, I love to sew clothing and do refashions. A couple of my favorite clothing projects would probably have to be this ruffled shirt:

Other favorites would have to be this set of sheer overlay skirts:

*And, not to leave you without a few how-to's, below you'll find a few links my readers found helpful. Hope you do too.
I love to meet new bloggers! Stop by ShannonSews and say hi. Any friend of Dresden's, is a friend of mine!

Guest Post: Homemakin' & Decoratin'

  Hi everyone! I'm Jessica from
This is my first time ever guest posting, so I was super excited when Dresden asked me to come over and share a little bit about myself and my blog!
I LOVE anything and everything crafty and creative! I'm pretty much always craving to make something! Since after marrying my husband in 2009 and moving from California to New Brunswick, Canada, I had to find ways to keep myself busy since I wasn't able to work yet. Also, living on a just-married budget gets your creative juices flowing when you have to learn to make do with what you have or don't have!
Around this same time I discovered the awesome world of blogs. Ever since then I have become an addict to crafty and thrifty home design blogs where I get most of my inspiration! And of course I was inspired to start my own blog where I could share all of my creative adventures, like my living room wall collage, DIY apothecary jars, crocheting, cake balls, making my own jewelry.. and lots more! I have an Etsy shop too!
In my shop I have little crocheted hair goodies, baby hats and headbands, sweet little earrings, and other fun handmade items. I daydreamed often about opening my own shop, but was always too chicken to try. I tend to doubt the worth of my work way too much, but my friends and family encouraged me to go for it. So I did! Metsy Made is still very new and I've had just a few sales. But I think I'm really going to enjoy it! Stop by and have a look around!
Today I want to share a YUMMY tutorial with you all. If you're an ice cream lover like me then you'll LOVE this!
Last summer (and also this weekend!) I made this yummalicious cake for a friend's birthday, and I pretty much just made everything up. I'm probably not the first to try something like this, but I was proud of myself for thinking it up. And I know summer's pretty much coming to an end, but those of us who are addicted to ice cream don't need warm weather to eat our favorite treat! (and also I'm trying to hold onto EVERYthing summer like.. since summer here in New Brunswick seems so short and the winter SOOO long!) What you will need
Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream Package of Oreo cookies Tub of Cool Whip Box of instant vanilla pudding  ( or you could use chocolate too!)
1. Before starting, pull the ice cream out of the freezer and let it thaw and soften for awhile.
2. Crush up most of the cookies in a bowl. I used a meat tenderizer to crush them up!
3. Melt a couple tablespoons of butter and mix it with the crushed cookies, then spread it all out into a dish that you don't mind keeping in the freezer. I just use my 9x13 dish.
4. Mix up the vanilla pudding just like the box instructs. Then mix the cool whip right into the pudding and then add that mixture right on top of the cookie crust. You may want to put that right into the freezer just for a little bit so it firms up before spreading on the ice cream.
5. Dump ice cream into a large bowl and mush and stir up until it's soft and spreadable. If it's not really soft it will mess up the other layers you have on the cake already.
6. Now you can take the remaining cookies and crush them up for a topping! I always have about 4 cookies left even after doing the topping... I like oreos! :)
Put your cake in the freezer and wait for what seems like EVER and EVER till it's frozen enough, then happily eat it up while saying, "I love you! I love you!" to your yummy treat!
I hope you'll come visit me on my blog sometime!!
Thank you Dresden for inviting me to come and share a little something on your blog!
